On May 19, 1892, The Needham Cooperative Bank opened for business in a room on the third floor of the Bourne Building at the corner of Chestnut Street and Great Plain Avenue. At that time Needham was a small town with a population of about two thousand, with manufacturing specialties in hosiery and bicycles (the Union Safety Bicycle Company was a major employer). During the many years since then The Needham Cooperative Bank has grown with its community, providing banking services to encourage thrift, home ownership, and enterprise.
From its earliest days The Needham Cooperative Bank was known for its friendly service and deep commitment to the community. Having already established this solid foundation, The Needham Cooperative Bank opened its current main office in 1923. To better serve Needham and the surrounding communities, The Needham Cooperative Bank merged with the Medfield Cooperative Bank in the summer of 1965, and in 1975 opened the Westwood branch. Three years later the Wellesley branch was added. In 2007 The Needham Cooperative Bank merged with The Dedham Co-operative Bank and formed Needham Bank.
Needham Bank is an excellent example of the proverb, “Tall oaks from little acorns grow.” By remaining loyal to its primary mission of promoting thrift and home ownership, by consistently offering products and services that are among the best in the business, and most importantly, by never forgetting its commitment to the community, Needham Bank has seen its capital and deposit base grow substantially. We enthusiastically thank our customers for their many years of support as we look forward to many more years of standout success in the local banking industry.
